Hi, I’m Nikki – the hands, heart, and soul behind Silver Sunbird. Every piece of jewellery you see here has been handmade by me, quite literally, with one hand. What began as a personal need for hypoallergenic jewellery quickly evolved into a much bigger mission: to inspire confidence, share strength, and prove that anything is possible – even when the odds are stacked against you.
When I was 20, I was suddenly struck down by a rare form of multiple sclerosis called tumefactive MS. An attack was so severe that I ended up on life support, completely paralysed down my right side. Doctors didn't know if I would ever walk, speak, or care for myself again – but I had other ideas. After months in hospital and years of hard work, I’ve defied those expectations. I still live with the effects of my condition, and I only have the use of one hand, but I’ve built a business I love and a life filled with creativity and purpose.
What It’s Really Like to Make Jewellery One-Handed
People often ask me how I manage to craft everything with just one functioning hand. The truth? It’s a challenge, absolutely – but it’s also taught me to be incredibly inventive. I’ve adapted my whole workspace to suit my needs. I use clamps to secure materials, sticky mats to stop beads rolling away, and tools with modified grips to give me the stability I need.
It’s not about doing things the “normal” way – it’s about finding my way. Every step of the making process has been carefully adjusted to work for me. From stringing delicate gemstones to attaching tiny findings, every move is deliberate and considered. It might take longer, but the love and intention that goes into each creation is immeasurable.
And here's the thing – creating this way makes me incredibly mindful. There’s no rushing. Every earring, bracelet, and necklace is made slowly, with care and meaning. For me, jewellery isn’t just about style – it’s about storytelling. It’s a way to honour resilience, celebrate individuality, and remind each of us that we are stronger than we know.
